Here at Jacaranda Hill Farm in beautiful Fairbridge, WA, just an hour south of Perth and 30 minutes from Mandurah, we're passionate about happy hens and the incredible eggs they lay. If you've ever wondered about the buzz around "pasture-raised" eggs, you've come to the right place! We're here to answer your most common questions and share why our eggs are truly something special.

What's the Difference: Pasture-Raised vs. Free-Range Eggs?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions, and for good reason! While both terms suggest hens have outdoor access, there's a significant distinction:

  • Free-Range: This certification means hens "have access" to the outdoors. However, the size and quality of that outdoor space can vary greatly. Often, it's a small, sometimes barren, fenced-in area, and the hens may not spend much time there.

  • Pasture-Raised: This is the gold standard! Our Jacaranda Hill Farm hens live up to this. They spend their days out on lush, green pastures, foraging for insects, worms, and fresh vegetation. This natural diet and active lifestyle are what make pasture-raised eggs so superior. They're truly living their best chicken lives!

How Long Do Pasture-Raised Eggs Last?

Fresh pasture-raised eggs, like those from Jacaranda Hill Farm, can last a surprisingly long time! When stored properly in the refrigerator, they typically maintain their quality for 4-5 weeks from the date they were laid. The freshness you get from a local farm often means a longer shelf life in your fridge compared to supermarket eggs that have travelled further.

Are Pasture-Raised Eggs Better?

Absolutely! And it's not just about taste (though they are undeniably richer). Pasture-raised eggs offer a superior nutritional profile:

  • Higher in Omega-3s: Thanks to their varied diet, our pasture-raised hens produce eggs with significantly more beneficial omega-3 fatty acids.

  • More Vitamin D: Spending time in the sunshine allows our hens to synthesise more Vitamin D, which then transfers to their eggs.

  • Increased Vitamins A & E: Studies have shown higher levels of these crucial vitamins in pasture-raised eggs.

  • Lower Cholesterol & Saturated Fat: Often, pasture-raised eggs contain less of these compared to their conventional counterparts.

Beyond nutrition, there's the ethical aspect. Happy, healthy hens living in their natural environment simply produce better eggs.

Why are Pasture-Raised Egg Yolks More Orange?

This is one of the most visually striking differences, and it's a direct result of our hens' diet! The vibrant, deep orange yolk in a Jacaranda Hill Farm egg comes from:

  • Carotenoids: Our hens' natural diet of fresh grasses, clovers, and foraged insects is rich in carotenoids (the same pigments that give carrots and pumpkins their orange hue). These natural pigments are deposited directly into the yolk.

  • Chlorophyll: The chlorophyll from green plants also plays a role in enhancing the richness of the yolk colour.

It's a beautiful visual indicator of a healthy, natural diet and a truly nutrient-dense egg!

Are Pasture-Raised Eggs Organic?

Not necessarily, though many pasture-raised farms, including ours, often employ organic practices. "Organic" refers to the feed the hens consume (must be organic, non-GMO, and free of pesticides/herbicides) and certain living conditions. "Pasture-raised" refers specifically to the amount and quality of outdoor access.

At Jacaranda Hill Farm, while we're not officially certified organic, we prioritise natural foraging and supplementary feed that is as natural and wholesome as possible, ensuring our hens are healthy and happy.

Which Pasture-Raised Eggs Are Best?

We might be a little biased, but we truly believe the best pasture-raised eggs come from farms where you can see the commitment to hen welfare and sustainable practices. Look for farms that:

  • Provide ample, diverse pasture: Not just a small patch of dirt.

  • Rotate their pastures: This keeps the land healthy and provides fresh forage.

  • Prioritise hen health and happiness: Healthy hens lay the best eggs!

  • Are transparent about their practices: We love talking about our hens!
