From the Brooder Box to the Paddock

They came in small, fluffy, and a little uncertain β and they've spent every day since getting stronger, growing feathers, and filling the shed with more noise than you'd expect from something so small. Right now they're living in the brooder box in our main shed, kept warm and dry while their feathers fill in properly. It's one of those quiet, satisfying parts of farm life β check

Discover the Joy of Pasture-Raised Eggs at Jacaranda Hill Farm
Understanding Pasture-Raised Eggs This is one of the most frequently asked questions, and for good reason! While both terms suggest hens have outdoor access, there's a significant distinction: Free-Range: This certification means hens have access to the outdoors. However, the size and quality of that outdoor space can vary greatly. Often, it's a small, sometimes barren, fenced-in area, and the hens may not spend much time there. Pasture-Raised: This is the gold standard! Ou

Busy Week @ Jacaranda Hill Farm
The end of our busy season, the end of the school holidays. Thank you to everyone who came to stay during the last school holidays. We had a busier October than last year. Last week back to normality. It was exhausting but well worth the hard work. Light Sussex baby chickens First week back at school for the kids, which means they are back into a routine. This can be a little more challenging for those on the spectrum as the change in routine or early mornings can be hard to

Flat Tyre on Betty
Poor Betty (Our red Massey Ferguson tractor) picked up a flat tyre yesterday. I went up to the shed to cut the paddock with her and found water all over the floor and Betty leaning to one side. I had never had to fix a flat on a tractor before. Usually, there is a spare wheel in a car when you get a flat there. So I got the hi-lift jack out, put her up on stands, and took the wheel off. I took a quick trip to Tyrepower down the road to drop it off, and it was ready by the aft

The making of Jack the Firetruck
Back in late January, we picked up an old 1978 Ford F100 truck. Not in the best condition, but the engine ran. The idea is that we somehow fit a 1000L IBC and petrol water pump to him and make it into a farm firetruck. A couple of weeks after Jack arrived on the farm, he got to meet Betty, our reliable Massey. We named them both after my wife's grandparents as a memory of them. Straight away, we had issues starting up Jack as his starter motor wouldn't spin. We decided to giv

From the need to survive comes our Self Sustainable Farm
Around three years ago, Robert and I ventured on a new way of life, a slow path for our family to have a life that was different to the norm. This meant that our children, then 1.5 years and 0.5 years, and dog, would have a very different life from the suburban box in which we currently would be living in. We took a risk, and at the time, it was scary. We had to sell 3 of our five houses due to me being on Maternity leave for the second time within a year. Yes, we had our bab
